So I’ve been running now for, wow, 5 years now. I haven’t put on as many miles in those 5 years as I’d like but I’d guess I’ve done around 2,000 miles total in that time. Which isn’t horrible but my goal this year is between 1,000 and 1,500 miles so I have a pretty agressive running goal this year!
And I think it bears mentioning how I even got back into running. I’ve told the story before but its always worth repeating. I was at a Lightning game with Carolyn and I was bemoaning my general lack of fitness. I had started losing some weight at the time but it was slow and I knew I needed more. I mentioned that when I was at the Air Force Academy I was really fit and could run for quite long distances (though, my downfall being that I did it too slow for the Air Force!)
Her simple comment to me? “Why don’t you just go run then?” As if it were that easy! Well, a few days later I was sitting at home playing some video game and thought, what the hell am I doing? I just got up, put on some shoes, and went for a run. I think it was like 5 or 6 minutes. But less than a month later I ran a 5k in under 30 minutes and I was hooked. So thanks, Carolyn!
Today I added something new. I really want something more than just running for more fitness so I went to the gym and swam for a half hour. Wow, I’m really bad at swimming laps but I’ll get better (I hope anyway…). Plan is to do that 2 days a week since I run 4. And when I’m home, with my bike, I can do a ride on Saturdays. I’m not sure if that’s enough biking to train for a triathalon but I’m not planning for one until the summer so I can evaluate my biking mileage in a few months. Right now the swim is by far where I need the most work!
